The birth of His Royal HighnessPrince Siriraj Kakudhabhandha

His Royal Highness Prince Siriraj Kakudhabhandha, the 5th beloved son of King Chulalongkorn and Queen Sri Bajarindra, was born in Boromraj Sthitya Maholan Hall at 2:06 PM on Friday, November 27, 1985.

That night, countless shooting stars appeared like streaks of light down to the earth, like fireworks, which His Royal Highness Crown Prince Maha Vajirunhis also recorded in his daily diary. This phenomenon resulted in his nickname "Prince of the shooting stars.” He was also known as "Iat" or "Luk Iat" by King Chulalongkorn.

On the occasion of His Royal Highness Prince Siriraj Kakudhabhandha's one-month birthday on December 28 - 29, 1885, he was given his full name, 'His Royal Highness Prince Siriraj Kakutabhundu Sanphawisutthimahudimongkol Aneknopdoldararat Samant Boriphat Warophat Adisorn Ratchachulalongkorn Wisuddhisomtawaro Phatopak Ukritthasak Arkhararajakumar'.

His Royal Highness Prince Siriraj Kakudhabhandha’s illness

His Royal Highness Prince Siriraj Kakudhabhandha was 18 months old when he died in Boromraj Sthitya Maholan Hall on March 31st, 1887 at 7:24 PM, causing great sorrow for King Chulalongkorn and Queen Sri Bajarindra.

It was also Her Majesty Queen Sunandha Kumariratana and Her Royal Highness Princess Kannabhorn Bejaratana's memorial day on the day of the death. This day was known as "Misfortune." Not only did Prince Siriraj Kakudhabhandha die at the age of 1 year, 6 months, and 4 days, but Her Royal Highness Princess Bahurada Manimaya, Her Royal Highness Prince Tribejrutama Dhamrong, and Her Royal Highness Princess Saovabhark Nariratana also died in the same year.

His Royal Highness Prince Siriraj Kakudhabhandha's body was put in Dhamma Sangwet Hall for a royal cremation, with His Royal Highness Prince Bhanurangsi Savangwongse serving as a ceremonial leader, and Phraya Ratchasongkram (Tat) serving as a craftsman. The royal crematorium featured nine-tiered Busabok and thrones, as well as flower decorations. In addition, the King directed his royal family to construct pavilions surrounding the crematorium.

King Chulalongkorn, Queen Sri Savarindira, and Queen Sri Bajarindra granted royal cremation on February 20th. After the cremation, the King had wooden buildings demolished to obtain lumbers and directed his son's possessions and inheritance in the amount of 700 Chang (Thai old money) or around 56,000 Baht to the hospital, which was under construction in Wang Lang and completed in 1887.

The opening of the hospital

On April 26th, 1888, the committee announced the inauguration of the hospital for treatment, and in December 1888, the committee reported the hospital's establishment and management to King Chulalongkorn. On December 25th, 1888, he wrote the response letter that

"...This hospital has been planned for a long time. I wish to open it right away but it could not succeed. I had merely revealed that if I died, I would divide the privy purse for hospital usage. Do it until it succeed as the will. If I am still alive, I will construct it and sustain it with some capital, not inheritance money, which I will subsequently donate to the hospital. Also, with my ability to spend public funds, I shall spend the hospital's foundation as needed. Even though the plan was implemented, it could not be sustained. Following the tragedy of losing my darling son and the pain of his sickness treatment, I realised that if my son, who was well-protected, had to suffer this much, how much more would poor children have to endure? Such thoughts fueled my determination to construct a hospital. After that, Damrong Rajanubhab aimed to build the hospital and propose it. I believe it is achievable, so I will appoint you all, committee, to handle this matter. When I discussed this with Saowapha Phongsi, she expressed her desire to help people who are ill, and she offered to donate the treasure of our departed son to help creating this hospital..." By royal command, he selected the health care department to operate the hospital instead of the committee, and he called a major hospital in Wanglang "Siriraj Hospital" to commemorate and bless the siriraj both then and now.
